The Naismith Trophy
The Atlanta Tipoff Club, which awards college basketball’s Naismith Trophy, has released its 2009-10 watch list for the Men’s College Player of the Year. While two of the last three trophies have been claimed by underclassmen, this year’s watch list is dominated by upperclassmen, as they hold 33 of the 50 spots. There are 19 seniors, 14 juniors, 13 sophomores and four freshmen.
The watch list selection is based on player performance from the previous basketball season and expectations for the current basketball season. The trophy will be awarded at the 2010 NCAA Men’s Final Four tournament.
The trophy is also awarded to the Woman College Player of the Year, Coach of the Year (for both men and women NCAA Division 1 basketball), Official of the Year (for both men and women NCAA Division 1 basketball) and Outstanding Contribution of Basketball (male or female).
World Cup Trophy on Tour to Encourage Solidarity

The FIFA World Cup trophy is on a 70-day journey to encourage solidarity among people. The trophy’s journey will end in South Africa, where the soccer competition will be held.
The African tour that started in September in Egypt will continue to Namibia and down to South Africa. Of the 27 countries visited to date, 21 Heads of State have had the opportunity to hold the trophy.
The trophy is 14.5 inches tall, weighs 13 pounds and is made of 18 karat gold.

Lott Trophy: BC Linebacker Honorary Recipient

The Lott Trophy sponsors announced today that Boston College linebacker, Mark Herzlich, will be awarded an honorary trophy.
Herzlich missed the 2009 football season battling Ewing’s Sarcoma cancer. He was a quarter-finalist in 2008 and on the watch list for 2009.
He is also only the second person to receive an honorary Lott Trophy. The first honorary trophy went to the family of Pat Tillman, the former pro-football standout who volunteered for the military and was killed in Afghanistan.

Bank Austria Tennis Trophy Awarded

The Bank Austria Tennis Trophy was awarded to homegrown champion Jurgen Melzer, who defeated Croatian Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-3 on Sunday.
Austria now has at least two tennis trophies, as Melzer became the first from the nation to win the trophy since Horst Skoff in 1988.
“This is unbelievable; to beat Cilic for this title is really a great accomplishment. I’m really happy,” said the trophy winner

Calder Trophy Hockey Hopefuls
The Calder Trophy, or Rookie of the Year Award, for the NHL will be presented soon to one of the rookie standouts from this season. Some of the trophy hopefuls are Tampa Bay Lightening’s defenseman Victor Hedman, Colorado Avalanche’s forward Matt Duchesne, and the most talked about favorite, John Tavares of the New York Islanders.
