2010 Hockey World cup to be staged in New Delhi

The 2010 Hockey World Cup will be the twelfth installment of the Men’s Hockey World Cup. On November 14, 2007, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) announced that the championship would be held in India, taking place over two weeks from Feb 28 to March 13, 2010 at New Delhi’s Dhyan Chand National Stadium.

India’s hosting of the event was put in doubt, however, when the FIH reviewed the progress of the Indian Hockey Federation’s “Promoting Indian Hockey” program and India’s preparation for the championship, and warned that “satisfactory progress had not been made in either area”. India was warned it could lose the right to host the World Cup unless satisfactory progress was made. It was confirmed on July 18, 2008 that International Hockey Federation formally awarded the hosting rights to India.

Dancing with the Stars Grand Finally

Tom Bergeron announced the third-place couple Kelly Osbourne and Louis van Amstel. This was really not a surprise to fans of the show and you only had to wait through an hour and 52 minutes of filler before the host made this glorious third place announcement.

Now it is the time to reveal the champion after the classic commercial break.

Would it be Donny Osmond or Mya?
Crowd appeal or technical skill?

The lesson? You simply are not going to beat Donny Osmond at pretty much anything, he has way to much family appeal.

An estimated 19.2 million people watched the season 9 finale which the smallest audience for the show’s finale since the first season. The Nielsen Co. said Wednesday ratings have been down all season for the show, an indication that viewers weren’t as attached to the contestants as they had in the past. How can this be Chuck Liddell martial art and mma legend, come on.
Oh well we will see who they get for next season if there is one!

Lionel Messi wins Ballon d’Or 2009

Lionel Messi has become the first Argentinian to win the Ballon d’Or, the FC Barcelona forward claiming the prize awarded by France Football (soccer) magazine for the European Player of the Year.

Brilliant campaign
The 22-year-old eclipsed runner-up and last year’s winner Cristiano Ronaldo by a record 240-point margin. Messi earned 473 points out of a possible 480, a near unanimous verdict, in the poll of 96 journalists worldwide. The award caps a brilliant year for a player who helped Barcelona to UEFA Champions League glory – he scored nine goals in last season’s campaign including the second in the final victory against Manchester United FC – as well as to a Spanish league and cup double.

‘Fantastic’
“It’s a great honour to have won this award and the fact that I’m the first Argentinian is very exciting,” said Messi, the prize having been opened up to non-Europeans in 1995. “The Ballon d’Or is very important for me. Every single player who has won it has been a fantastic player. I dedicate it to my family who are always by my side when needed. It won’t be easy to enjoy another year like 2009 and claim this award again.”

Baseball’s MVP and Cy Young Trophy Winners Announced

Baseball Trophies and Awards News…

It’s been a busy week for Major League Baseball. Four of the major annual trophies and awards have been awarded in some surprising announcements.

The American League announced its MVP on Monday, awarding the trophy to Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer. Mauer received 27 of the 28 first-place votes by the Baseball Writers Association of America to win. Until the voting results were in, Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter of the World Series Champion team, New York Yankees were also considered front runners.

Today, the National League announced their Cy Young winner. San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Tim Lincecum became the first player in the 54-year history of the Cy Young Award to capture it in his first two full seasons in the major leagues. In addition, at 25, Lincecum is the youngest NL pitcher to win consecutive Cy Youngs.

Kansas City Royal’s pitcher, Zack Greinke, was awarded the American League Cy Young trophy last week.

Finally, earlier today, the National League announced its Most Valuable Player for the 2009 season. Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals won his third National League Most Valuable Player award in five seasons.

Five 2009 Nagurski Trophy Finalists Announced

The Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) announced the final five finalists for the Nagurski Trophy. The association awards the trophy to the national college football defensive player of the year. The finalists are:

Eric Berry, Safety, University of Tennessee
Terrence Cody, Tackle, University of Alabama
Jerry Hughes, End, Texas Christian University
Ndamukong Suh, Tackle, University of Nebraska

The winner will be announced at a gala banquet on December 7.

Hockey season is in full effect, but the ultimate trophy, the Stanley Cup, isn’t the only award players are skating for each season. Let’s take a look at the three major player trophies annually awarded.

Hart Trophy: This trophy is awarded to the Most Valuable Player, as deemed by members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association, who vote to determine the player who was the most valuable to his team during the regular season. Wayne Gretzky won the award a record nine times during his career, eight consecutively.

Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy: Otherwise known as the Maurice Richard Trophy and the Rocket Richard Trophy, this trophy is awarded to the league’s leading goal scorer.

Veniza Trophy: This trophy is awarded to the NHL’s top goalie. The trophy’s winner is determined by the league’s 30 General Managers, who vote to determine which goalie was the most valuable to his team during the regular season.

The Land of Lincoln Trophy is the prize for the winner of tomorrow’s annual Northwestern-Illinois football game. The trophy was previously known as the Sweet Sioux Tomahawk, but has been given a new name and a new look.

Weighing 28.5 pounds, the trophy features a bronze model of Abraham Lincoln’s top hat sitting on a slab of wood. The dimensions for the trophy were taken from the hat Lincoln wore during the Gettysburg Address.

While the trophy’s name and look may be new, the rivalry isn’t. This is the 103^rd meeting of the two teams, with the Northwestern Wildcats winning five of the last six in the series.

Country Music Awards: Swift Makes History with Trophy Win

Trophies were everywhere at last night’s Country Music Awards, but no more than in the hands of 19-year-old singing sensation Taylor Swift. Swift won four trophies, sweeping the award categories she was nominated in, including: Best Album, Best Music Video, Best Female Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year. Swift is the youngest artist to win the CMA’s Entertainer of the Year trophy.

Also making history with his trophy win last night was Darius Rucker, the first black artist to win New Artist of the Year.
